Before we delve into the intriguing reproduction saga of Moss Balls, it's essential to debunk a common myth. Marimo Moss Balls aren't your garden-variety moss. In reality, these enchanting green spheres are a rare form of algae, scientifically christened Aegagropila linnaei. But here's where it gets really fascinating: each Moss Ball is not just a single organism. Imagine, if you will, a densely packed metropolis, bustling and thriving beneath the surface of these verdant orbs.
At first glance, a Moss Ball might look like a simple, solitary green ball. However, this is a clever disguise. In truth, each Moss Ball is a tightly knit community, a colony of individual algae filaments living in unison. Each filament works together, contributing to the health and growth of the entire colony. It's akin to a team of artists collectively sculpting a masterpiece, constantly rolling and reshaping themselves in water to maintain that perfect, spherical form.
Now, onto the main event – how do Moss Ball Pets reproduce? It's all about budding and splitting:
Budding - The Beginnings of New Life in Moss Ball Pets: In the budding process, a tiny piece of the Marimo starts to grow on the parent ball. Over time, this little chunk, packed with ambition, separates from the parent and begins its journey as a new Moss Ball. Think of it as a teenager moving out to start their own life, only much, much slower.
Splitting - A Natural Milestone in the Life of Moss Ball Pets:
The splitting of a Moss Ball Pet is a natural, healthy part of its life cycle, akin to a rite of passage. As these aquatic plants mature, splitting becomes an inevitable and essential process, much like flowers blooming or trees shedding leaves. It's not a sign of distress but a reflection of growth and renewal. This natural division is the Moss Ball's way of continuing its legacy, each fragment embodying the vitality and resilience of the original.
When your Moss Ball Pet begins this fascinating process, it offers a unique opportunity to engage with the natural world. Caring for the new fragments involves gently rolling them to maintain their spherical form and ensure even exposure to crucial elements like light and nutrients. Over time, these fragments will slowly grow into independent Moss Balls, each starting its own journey. By nurturing these new entities, you become an integral part of their life cycle, celebrating the enduring spirit and wonder of Marimo.
Have you spotted a small bump on your Moss Ball or seen it split into fragments? Congratulations, you might soon be a grandparent to new Moss Ball Pets! Both budding and splitting mark the beginning of new life. These tiny newcomers, whether buds or splits, require your attentive care. Keep them in clean, temperate water, and mimic the gentle rolling motion they'd experience in nature by rolling them in your hands periodically.
This care helps maintain their spherical shape and ensures even exposure to light and nutrients, crucial for their growth. Patience is essential as both budding and splitting offspring grow at a leisurely pace, but watching them develop is a rewarding journey into the marvels of nature's resilience and beauty.
Moss Balls won't win any races with their growth rate, but that's part of their charm. These aquatic pets grow at a leisurely few millimeters per year, teaching us all a valuable lesson in patience and the beauty of slow living.
There you have it – the lowdown on Moss Ball reproduction. From budding newbies to splitting veterans, each Moss Ball has its own story to tell. Want to dive deeper? Our articles are a treasure trove of Moss Ball care tips and amusing facts.

But these algae aren't just rolling in the deep for fun. The spherical shape allows Marimo to capture maximum sunlight as they roll along the lakebed, a strategy as brilliant as it is bizarre.
Just like trees, Marimo moss balls have growth rings. However, these aren't your average rings. These are layers upon layers of dense and sparse algal filaments, alternating with the seasons. During the warmer months, when Marimo bask in the sunlight and roll freely under the gentle caress of the waves, their surface becomes densely packed with algae. Come winter, as the ice seals the lake, the Marimo enter a state akin to hibernation, and their growth slows down, marking the end of a chapter in their annual growth.
The dance of the Marimo is orchestrated by the wind, the waves, and the whims of weather. As the breezes sweep across Lake Akan, they stir up waves that set the Marimo twirling. Not just any wind can make them dance; it takes a special kind – a breeze just brisk enough to rouse the waves without causing a tempest. These gentle movements polish the Marimo, maintaining their perfect form and encouraging their growth, all thanks to nature's subtle nudges.
But wait, there's more! Marimo are more than just pretty green balls; they're a microcosm of nutrient recycling. Inside these spheres, a tiny ecosystem thrives, breaking down organic matter and releasing nutrients that feed the Marimo, allowing them to flourish in even the most oligotrophic (nutrient-poor) waters. It's a self-contained world, a miniature marvel that underscores the interconnectedness of life.
As we marvel at the resilience and adaptability of Marimo, we must also recognize their vulnerability. Climate change poses a real threat to these aquatic wonders. Alterations in wind patterns could disrupt the subtle balance of their environment, potentially hindering their ability to grow and reproduce. The preservation of Marimo isn't just about saving a quirky aquatic plant; it's about safeguarding the intricate web of life that they represent.
So, what can you, the reader, do? Start by becoming a steward of these enchanting aquatic allies. When you purchase a Marimo from Moss Ball Pets, you're not just buying a plant; you're adopting a piece of the earth's living history. Care for it, watch it grow, and let it remind you of the extraordinary, often unseen wonders that our world holds.

]]>Moss Balls, scientifically known as Aegagropila linnaei and referred to as marimo (毬藻, literally "ball seaweed") in Japan, are spherical-shaped algae that are found mostly in cold lakes around the world. Moss Balls have a velvety appearance and can grow into large green balls. They are found in Iceland, Scotland, Japan, Estonia, and Australia.
There is a beautiful Japanese legend of two lovers from the island of Hokkaido, Princess Senato and Manibe, who were forbidden to be together. This tragic tale is one of the reasons why Moss Balls have become a symbol of eternal love. Moss Balls bring Love, Luck, and Happiness to the ones who take care of them!

The Ainu people of Hokkaido are renowned for their storytelling, which they practice as Uepeker - a form of storytelling that can last for hours or days. They are also animists, which means that they believe that everything has a spirit, this is important because of what takes place later in the story. The Ainu Tribe lived along the shores of Lake Akan and favored Mount Oakan.
The tragic tale of love on the Island of Hokkaido tells the story of Princess Senato, the daughter of the Ainu tribal chief, and Manibe, a hunter. It is said that one day, while Princess Senato was gathering berries in the mountains, a group of men on horseback galloped in and shot arrows at the deer. As they surrounded the deer, Princess Senato and Manibe locked eyes, and they instantly fell in love.
From that moment forward, their fates were intertwined and they became star-crossed lovers. Despite their love, they were not allowed to be together due to their different social standings. One night they ran away together to live a quiet life in the forest and after spending decades in the wilderness together, Manibe passed away. Soon after Princess Senato died because she never recovered from her broken heart. People believe that their kamuy, or spirit, transformed into a pair of marimo.
In honor of their enduring love, the people of Hokkaido began to collect moss balls from the shores of Lake Akan and believed that these round spheres embodied the couple’s eternal love for one another. To this day, marimo are seen as symbols of everlasting love.

However, there was a time when no one knew what they were or what to call them!
The first recorded discovery of these velvety balls of algae occurred in the 1820s when an Austrian botanist and physician, Anton E. Sauter, took notice of them. He spotted them in Lake Zell (a.k.a. Lake Zeller) which is a small body of water located in Austria.
Although Sauter observed the odd-looking organisms, he did not name them. They did not officially receive a name until the 1840s.
In 1843, Friedrich T. Kützing, a German botanist, phycologist, and pharmacist, indicated that the genus for this organism was Aegagropila.
Just when the world of phycology thought that this phenomenon could not get any more interesting, there were more stories of discoveries taking place around the globe, in places such as Iceland, Scotland, and Sweden. In 1898, a Japanese botanist, Tatsuhiko Kawakami, discovered A. linnaei in Lake Akan in Hokkaido, Japan.
Tatsuhiko Kawakami is the one we can thank for the Japanese common name, marimo, which roughly translates to “bouncy ball” in English. After his initial discovery, the popularity of marimo increased exponentially, and many people were spending money to attain these little velvety green orbs.
By the 1920s, the people of Japan joined together to preserve their beautiful species of algae and every year since then, Marimo Matsuri has taken place to celebrate nature and all of its beauty with marimo being the primary focus of the festival.
Currently, there are three ways that scientists have identified the growth of lake goblins.
Isn’t lake goblins a fun name for moss balls?
One growth form exists as free-floating filaments. This means that little clumps of the algae simply float through the water, usually lining the bottom of the body of water where they reside. Think of this form of growth as looking like a plush green carpet at the bottom of a lake.
Another form is when A.linnaei filaments become epilithic (which is just a fun way to say that a plant grows on a rock).
In other instances, it can turn into the marimo that we know and love!
For this transformation to take place, the algae are pushed and pulled by the tides of the body of water. This movement helps keep the lake balls clean and round. Another thing moss balls require is the ability to occasionally access light so that photosynthesis can take place.
Unfortunately, some people do not enjoy the mystery of the moss ball and they want to know, “What is going on inside of this thing?”.
Some think that it is like a pearl, a seed, or something similar to an avocado pit. Despite these assumptions…
There is nothing at the center of the lake balls except their algae.
So, there is no longer a need for you to wonder if there is some sort of rock or filler in the middle of your Moss Ball Pet!
This question seems to pop up often!
They usually reproduce through budding:
Your Moss Ball Pet also will need room to continue growing. You might notice a little bump forming on its rounded surface and that is how you can tell that it is creating another marimo 🟢!
After the initial discoveries in places such as Japan, Austria, Iceland, and Scotland, the cladophora ball craze began. Phycologists, botanists, and other scientists were eager to see if bodies of water in their parts of the world contained the mystical and spherical green orbs of algae.
Thanks to their excitement, we now know that cladophora balls can be found in a multitude of other countries such as:
This may be a little surprising (especially if this is your first Moss Ball Pets blog post) but Moss Ball Pets are not moss at all! It is easy to see how people could get algae and moss mixed up. They are both soft, usually green, and damp, right?
While moss and algae have some characteristics in common, they differ because moss is a plant and algae is still perplexing.
The Moss Ball Pets that you purchase with us are not the endangered species of algae that we’ve been discussing. These marimo are artificially rolled from free-floating filaments.
This means that small pieces of the algae are taken from the various lakes where marimo can be found and then maintained until it is ready to be sold. I
This way, people can appreciate these beautiful and unique plants without endangering them or their habitats.

Due to their unique aspects and popularity, conservation efforts needed to be instilled shortly after moss balls were discovered.
In Lake Mývatn, Iceland, the moss balls have almost entirely disappeared due to ecological upset. Since there was a lot of fishing and mining, the lake began to produce more nutrients which caused bacteria and other organisms to flourish.
This meant that the lake balls were not able to get enough sunlight and they began to sink beneath the sediment in the lake due to constant mining.
Now, instead of the colonies of moss balls that used to inhabit the lake, the Icelandic people are left with some of the free-floating filaments which can not form into the balls because they still do not have the right conditions.
Conservation tactics have recently been put into place so that this is no longer the situation.
As previously mentioned, Japan went a different route to avoid this tragedy from happening. Marimo was declared a national treasure in the 1920s and since then most people have refrained from removing the marimo that grow in their natural habitat.
Moss Ball Pets are unique living organisms that are rapidly disappearing but through continued conservation and research efforts, they can continue to be admired for many more generations!

Fun Fact: More calls are made on Mother's Day than any other day of the year. Reportedly there are approximately 122 million calls are made on the second Sunday of May every year (Silverman, 2022).
Mother’s Day began to be celebrated in the United States in 1868 when Ann Jarvis organized Mothers’ Friendship Day. This was originally a way for mothers to gather with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation after the Civil War.
While Ann Jarvis and many other people (Mary Towles Sasseen and Frank Hering, Julia Ward Howe, and Juliet Calhoun Blakely, amongst others) campaigned to have Mother’s Day recognized on a national level, they were largely unsuccessful.
However, as fate would have it, following Ann’s death in 1905, her daughter Anna Jarvis began hosting Mother’s Day events and advocating for a day that honored motherhood by contacting politicians and writing to newspapers. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure to officially establish Mother’s Day as a national event.
“In addition to the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, Costa Rica, Samoa, Georgia, Australia, and Thailand all have designated celebrations to honor their country's mothers (Silverman, 2022).”
Fun Fact: Some countries still observe ancient festivals honoring mothers. In India, people celebrate Durga-puja, a festival that pays homage to the mother goddess, Durga. This festival is a ten-day event that takes place around September or October (Silverman, 2022).
We have always known that parents deserve to be showered with appreciation every day and this was showcased wonderfully in May 2009 in the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message about the importance of mothers.
Fun Fact: Moms aren't the only ones getting Mother's Day love. The average American buys 2.8 Mother’s Day cards, so most people are buying more than just one for their mom. Many people opt to buy Mother's Day cards for grandmothers, sisters, and their mother-in-law as well. More love for moms to go around (Silverman, 2022).
Everybody is becoming a #PlantParent right now; your Mom was most likely cultivating a gorgeous garden before it became popular and this Mother’s Day would be a wonderful time to support her gardening goals. Whether you slide her a gift card to pick up some much-needed equipment or get your siblings to pitch in to purchase her dream plant, gardening is the way to go this year.
Don’t Be Basic: Consider deviating from the norm and helping her set up an indoor garden or aquatic garden, not only will it show her how much you care but it could be one of the best gifts she receives on Mother’s Day!
When was the last time you cooked for your mother? She probably spent more than a few hours preparing meals for you and your family as you grew up and now is the perfect time for you to return the favor!
If you are not sure, just cook something that you make exceptionally well and your Mom will probably love the dish simply because of the effort you put into it. You could also try something new and impressive-sounding like a croque monsieur.
She is not going to say it, so here it is: Please clean up the house. Go do any chore (bonus points if you do them all) because she will notice and appreciate it. The more you do now, the less she’ll have to do later. Show her that her space is valued and work with other household members to get it done. Your Moss Ball Pet can provide emotional support and your furry friends can help you manage your procrastinating tendencies.
For an unorthodox way to celebrate this fantastic day, go ultra-femme and set up a cute tea party: drinks, hors d'oeuvres, doilies, the works!
Whether the maternal figure(s) you celebrate on Mother’s Day is near or far, you can still take time to honor them and highlight the gratitude that you feel for the care and love that they have imbued into your life.
Fun Fact: The closest thing to Mother’s Day in ancient times would have most likely been a Christian festival that was known as Mothering Sunday.
Are you still on the hunt for a fantastic gift for a wonderful mom? If so, don’t worry about it any longer, a moss ball would make a marvelous Mother’s Day gift!
Moss Ball Pets are symbols of long-lasting love and there are many reasons they benefit those that receive a plushy zany moss ball. It would be a lovely gift for the mother who has everything or who never wants a gift.
Mothers are not known solely for their ability to raise children but for their strength in raising children AND maintaining their passions. If you ask any parent, they'll probably share Tina Fey’s sentiment about life as a mother, “Being a mom has made me so tired. And so happy.”
This Mother’s Day, please remember to visit or call your mom, if you can, and let them know that you’re sorry for making them so tired but you’re glad you could make them so happy!

It’s almost time to celebrate a very important day...
...that’s right, Mother’s Day! The history of Mother’s Day can be traced back to the ancient Roman and Greek societies. They would celebrate by having various ceremonies for different goddesses of fertility and mothers.
Mother’s Day is celebrated in almost every culture. It is necessary to take time to honor mothers, people who have provided a maternal presence, and the motherly bonds that are created. These celebrations usually take place in the spring, sometime during the months of March or May.

Some parents have decided that the best approach to this issue is homeschooling! During a typical school year, only 3% of students are home-schooled (Pecor,2020). However, one survey showed that 47% of parents want to homeschool their children this year.
One anonymous parent shared this thought about homeschooling via FamilyEducation.com:
When my oldest daughter was four, I agonized over whether to homeschool or send her to kindergarten. I doubted my ability to teach her. When I asked Mel, a dad who home-schooled his five children, for advice he said, "You've made it through the sleepless nights of infancy and toddler-hood, taught your daughter to speak, feed herself, dress herself, and behave properly. You're finally dealing with a reasonable little human being, the real fun of being a parent is about to begin, and suddenly you think you're no longer qualified?" Well, she never made it [went] to [public school] kindergarten, and now, almost ten years later, I'm very glad I heeded Mel's advice.”
Creating a flexible schedule, determining the curriculum, and getting to spend more time with their children are some of the benefits that parents enjoy when they choose to homeschool. It is no secret that the remote learning approach has been useful for parents who like to travel, want to incorporate unique extracurriculars (such as kite making or woodwork), and/or provide additional time for learning about subjects that excite their kids.
However, there are some requirements for teaching at home that may cause exhaustion, frustration, or confusion for parents. Many people are hesitant to implement a homeschooling curriculum because of the cost of learning materials, the amount of energy and effort needed to keep kids on task, and the struggle of providing enough opportunities for socialization.
Did your Science teacher ever surprise your class with a class pet at the beginning of the school year or during a particularly interesting Biology unit? Pets make the classroom experience better-- it’s a well-known fact that pets make our lives better!
According to Pets In The Classroom, “Even kids with no exposure to animals or nature in their home environment can see, feel, touch and make connections to the wide world of animals [and plants]. Observing and caring for an animal instills a sense of responsibility and respect for life; [and] a pet brings increased sensitivity and awareness of the feelings and needs of others—both animals and humans.”

Pets can be distracting or they can help inspire your child in many ways. Whether it’s Math (“What is the circumference of your Moss Ball?”) or Science, (“How does your Moss Ball eat?”) Geography (“What part of the world do Moss Balls come from?”), or English (“What adjectives would you use to describe your Moss Ball?”) your kid(s) will show that learning all these subjects can be done with new enthusiasm and interest. Family and friends could virtually visit your classroom pet and your students can create special presentations about them.
Other important reasons to consider getting a class pet for your homeschoolers include their ability to teach your child how to incorporate pet care into their daily schedule, provide emotional support, and deepening social skills.
There are endless ways to incorporate your pet into your homeschooling curriculum. To find out more, Eva Varga has some listed here in her blog.
Now that you understand how essential classroom pets are to educational enrichment, you need to decide on which one would be the best fit for your family and your budget.
There are a lot of reasons that people could be without a pet. Some of the things that prevent pets from finding a new home include landlord rules, jobs that require a lot of travel, allergies, finances and the list could go on and on.
Fortunately, Moss Ball Pets are the perfect pets for these unique situations. They don’t need to go out for a walk, you won’t have to ask someone to watch them when you’re on a weekend trip, and they won’t shed on your furniture. For those who already have a pet, a moss ball can still make a great addition to your family because they are so mellow, zany, and caring for them is unbelievably easy.
Mysterious. Magical. Marvelous. Mellow. These are some of the terms that people familiar with Moss Ball Pets might use to describe them. Not only are these sensational lovable little balls of algae great to look at, but they’re fun to take care of as well. Here are 6 reasons why you need to adopt a Moss Ball Pet today:

Since times are tough right now, here’s a list of some additional resources that may help as you embark on your homeschooling adventure:

]]>Are you thinking about adopting a Moss Ball Pet?
Do you already have your very own velvety, vibrant, green pal?
Some people acquire their moss ball through inheritance. Others have received marimo as a gift. No matter how your new friend has come into your life, now is a great time to think about the name that it deserves.
The name you choose could highlight it’s rich history, interesting scientific aspects, or a combination of things!
Naming your moss ball should be fun and if you start to stress over it, think about some quick basic names that might later become nicknames like:
When you’re ready to return to the naming process, take a moment to remember how much love, luck, and happiness this unique organism is going to provide.
Sometimes, naming your Moss Ball Pet after someone you love, or a place where you felt lucky or happy, is the perfect way to express your appreciation.
Fun fact: The world’s largest (and oldest) marimo is said to be 95 centimeters, or 37 inches, in diameter!
There seems to be a rule or tradition for every special moment in life, naming something or someone is included. Some families keep the tradition of giving their sons the same name as their fathers. That’s how you end up with names like Squilliam Fancyson III.

]]>What’s your favorite thing about summer?
Going to the beach, taking a break from school, or getting to spend more time with family are all great reasons to be excited about this season. Even more importantly, you’ll be able to spend time with your Moss Ball Pet!
Now I know that there are some skeptics out there wondering, “How in the world is this unique, velvety, green moss ball the perfect summer companion?”
Moss Ball Pets are such a fun way to make your summer much better! Here are three things you can start planning with your marimo today:
Despite all of the turmoil taking place right now, you can find a moment of solace with your favorite fuzzy moss amigo.
Fun fact: The first day of summer takes place during the Summer solstice, which is usually between June 20th-22nd. In 2021, the first day of summer was on Sunday, June 20th.
One way you can spend some quality time with those you love is by planning a group meetup that takes place outdoors, in a public setting such as a park.
Here’s how to plan a fun event in just a few steps:
Moss Ball Pets are perfect for joining you on this adventure because they require little to no care and you don’t need to feed them!
Fun fact: If this outing turns into a solo trip your moss ball could be your lucky charm along the way.
As we age, we tend to forget about the simple joys we experienced in our youth. For example, when was the last time you used a coloring book or made a wish with a dandelion? While coloring is a wonderful activity for when it’s too hot out, berry picking is a quintessential part of the summer vibe.
For some, berry picking was a chore that had to be done to assist their grandparents with canning or baking.
For others, picking berries was a fun morning activity that helped them become little fairies who wanted to make the World’s Best Mud Pies.
Despite how you’ve felt about it in the past, this year would be a great chance to rediscover the beauty of U-Pick Berry Farms.
If there isn’t a place to pick berries near your home, consider a visit to the local farmer’s market (if they are operating).
Taking your moss ball pet along is a great way to commemorate a fun day outdoors in a truly insta-worthy way. Have you seen the Moss Ball Pets Instagram? These lil cuties are very photogenic.
Another great reason to bring your zany buddy with you: it’s easy to transport! You can bring your marimo with you wherever you go, as long as you cover a few basic needs.
Fun fact: July 11th is National Blueberry Muffin Day! They deserve it because a general consensus shows that they’re America’s favorite muffin.
Spending some time creating a scavenger hunt for your particular area could be really exciting!
A lot of people don’t take enough time enjoying the interesting sites or special flora and fauna that help make each community distinct. This could be a multi-day project and multiple people can get involved.
First, take some time researching what kind of animals, plants, insects, and historical sites are within a mile or two of your home (include a few easy ones just to keep people engaged). Then, create a checklist that can be shared. When everyone has the list, go outside and have some fun.
This scavenger hunt can become even more fun if you create a hashtag for your neighborhood that people have to include when they post a picture of something on the checklist.
Come up with a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prize and let your neighbors know so that they can join the hunt!
The best part about all of the suggestions in this blog post is that you can take your moss ball with you the entire time.
Moss Ball Pets are the perfect pet for travelers. You can even take your good luck charm with you on a plane. All you need to do is:
Instead of letting time pass you by, you can go out and commemorate this historical time by starting a journal or photo album (don’t forget to include your moss ball!).
John Lubbock is quoted as saying, “Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time."
While we’re in the midst of a pandemic, continuous civil rights movement, and ever-changing times, please don’t forget to take time to rest, practice self-care, and be safe!
The important thing to remember is that you don’t need to deal with any of this alone, your Moss Ball Pet can be right there with you, every step of the way.

One in five people will suffer from neurological disorders in their lifetime. That’s 43.8 million people living with depression, anxiety, and other behavioral issues. Mental illness does not discriminate, it can affect anyone regardless of race, gender, or social class. Anyone can be affected at any time in their life.
Unlike physical illness, mental illness cannot be seen. Many people who live with mental illness feel a sense of shame about their situation because of the stigmas attached to their invisible issues.
In 1949, May was designated as Mental Health Awareness month to help end the stigma so many endure. By ending these harmful beliefs, more people will be able to access resources, treatment, and support.
Fun fact: To support mental health awareness, some people wear green ribbons!
Pets can positively affect mental health. According to the Mental Health Foundation, pets can be a way to relieve stress and anxiety. Having a companion to care for, talk to, and play with can ease the loneliness that depression can bring to your life.
All pets require maintenance and love, even when their owner is not doing too well. On days that you're feeling down and really don't want to get out of bed, you’ll know your friend is happily waiting for you. For many pet owners just realizing that they have a pet to look forward to spending time with is enough to motivate them to get out of bed and start their day!
Seeing a thriving pet also helps the owner feel appreciated and loved. It’s a truly rewarding experience to take care of and love a pet.
Fun fact: People with Alzheimer’s have fewer anxious outbursts when they have an animal companion!
Finding a low maintenance pet is usually ideal for those who must deal with mental illness. When someone feels like their bad days outweigh the good day, they don't want a pet that needs constant attention. It can end up being a stressor instead of stress relief.
Even cats who are notorious for being finicky with their owners need constant attention; they act like their bowls MUST be overflowing with food otherwise they are starving! They require toys, vet visits, litter, and clean litter boxes. For some, that could be ideal. Especially when you can hold your cute fluffy pet. But if your life is already hectic, it can be too much.
A pet that would be easy to take care of would be a moss ball pet. Marimo (Aegagropila linnaei) are small balls of algae, not moss, despite their nickname. They are native to Lake Akan in Japan and are a token of love and luck for life.
As pets, they require little attention. They thrive in cold dark waters while relying on waves to help them keep their unique orb-like shape. They need a little indirect sunlight and can be left alone for a long period of time.
Since moss balls don’t need a lot of sunlight, you can leave your moss ball pet beside your bed or in your kitchen. They won’t get upset if you leave them while you’re practicing self care. You also won’t have to worry about food since they make their own through photosynthesis.
They just require water and love! Just be sure to change their water every week or two. Every now and then, take your marimo out and roll them around gently in your palms. This helps them keep their shape while also helping you bond with your pet. It can be comforting since they are squishy kind of like slime!
They will grow up to five centimeters a year, and really that doesn't seem like much. However, when you have them for years, they can get quite big! Don't worry; it takes time so you won't have to rush out to find them a new tank anytime soon.
Fun fact: These mystical organisms can live for 200 years or longer. (Wow! Five centimeters a year seems huge now!)
Also, why not give your marimo some more friends? Moss ball pets are very beneficial to other water wildlife. They act as a filtration system in small tanks by absorbing pollutants such as ammonia. They also act as a safe place for other wildlife because they don't carry any parasites.
Stick a fish or two in the tank with this zany pet. Decorate the aquarium with some beautiful stones, trees, and other cute things! It would benefit your mental health to give yourself something beautiful and positive to enjoy. Lastly, please remember to take the time to care for yourself and your Moss Ball Pet!

There are millions of people who have cats and dogs as pets. However, on April 11th, also known as National Pet Day, pet owners have the opportunity to showcase pets that aren’t as popular as the aforementioned furry friends. Across the United States, many people decide to adopt their first pet on National Pet Day. An American actor, James Cromwell, has this to say about caring for a pet: “Pets are humanizing. They remind us we have an obligation and responsibility to preserve and nurture and care for all life.”
Surely you celebrate your pet every day! Now would be a great time to create something special for your pet to show them how much you love them. If you don’t have a pet yet, consider adopting a moss ball! Regardless of what you choose to do, National Pet Day is about enjoying the happiness your pet brings into your life.
Fun fact: Easter 2020 is just around the corner (April 12th). This year instead of including chicks or bunnies in Easter baskets, use Moss Ball Pets! Unlike traditional pets, you won’t have to worry about buying food or vet care. Click here to learn more about why Moss Ball Pets are the best pet.
Buying toys, treats, habitat decorations, and other fun things for your pet can become expensive. Cut back on those unnecessary costs by making a gift for your pet! A quick internet search can lead you to a video that teaches you how to make a tug-o-war rope for your dog or some toys for your pet bird.
If your pet had a medical emergency right now, would you be able to cover the cost? Many people don’t think about preparing for the unexpected and this is an issue that’s easy to resolve. There is a myriad of companies offering affordable pet insurance, and yes, it’s even available for pets like snakes, fish, and other unconventional pets.
Luckily, moss balls don’t need shots, a special diet, or anything else that would require attention from a veterinarian. If you’ve already adopted a Moss Ball Pet, instead of spending this time searching for the right insurance, spend some time on self-care (your moss ball can help!).
Due to COVID-19, you should not take any risks by taking a trip to a local animal shelter. Instead, visit their website and see what items you can have shipped to them. There might also be an option to make a financial contribution online to help the shelter through these challenging times.
If you visit petfinder.com, you can use this animal shelter locator to help a sweet companion find a new forever home.
There are a lot of reasons that people could be without a pet. Some of the things that prevent pets from finding a new home include: dorm rules, jobs that require a lot of travel, allergies, and the list could go on and on.
Right now, we have a special opportunity for people to adopt FREE BABY MOSS BALL PETS! You can claim your free babies by making any purchase on our website and typing "I WANT BABIES" in the comments box at checkout. *This offer is limited as we only have babies periodically.*
Do you have about 15 or 20 minutes? That’s all the time that you’ll need to get some memorable photos of you and your favorite companion(s). Taking some pictures with your pet is a great way to enjoy National Pet Day because then, you can share your cuddly companion with the rest of the world by including #NationalPetDay when you post on social media.
Fun fact: For bonus points, ask someone else to use the pictures or use a self-timer and wear a costume or matching outfit to achieve maximum cuteness!
We are in a pandemic, so now is not the time to meet up with pals at the park. That does not mean that you can’t go outdoors and take your pet out to get some fresh air. Spring has sprung! Now that the sun is out, you can grab one of those DIY toys you’ve made and spend some quality time with your best bud.
Don’t worry, your Moss Ball Pet loves traveling! You can go on a hike or take a quick bike ride on a local trail and your moss ball would enjoy the adventure.
When was the last time you held a quirky event? Birthday parties for pets are starting to become more common, visit any social media websites to see what other pet parents are doing. National Pet Day is the best time to sit down and plan out a loving celebration for your pet.
You could celebrate the day you adopted them, their graduation from obedience school, or just because you want them to know how much everyone loves them.
To make the day extra special, go to Pinterest and start crafting some DIY decorations!
National Pet Day is not the only time that you should enjoy time with your pet(s). Find the time today to research other days or events that are dedicated to making your pet feel special. These memorable occasions could help you connect with other pet owners and in the future, you can set up playdates. Isn’t that adorable?
Fun fact: Moss balls are celebrated in Japan during a festival known as Marimo Matsuri. To learn more about this 3-day event, click here!
National Pet Day was created in 2006 and is still celebrated because everyone wants an opportunity to showcase their amazing companions. The time that we get with our pets should be cherished.
It doesn’t matter if you bake them treats, buy them a new decoration for their tank, or take some lovely photos. All that matters is making sure that your pet feels loved every day.
If you’re ready to adopt a pet now, choose a Moss Ball Pet and you can get FREE baby moss balls 👶 by making any purchase on our website and typing "I WANT BABIES" in the comments box at checkout. *This offer is limited as we only have babies periodically.*

Fun fact: Spring usually begins during the spring equinox ( which is usually March 20th or 21st). 1896 is the last time that spring started on March 19th (it’s been 124 years)!
Every winter, people get excited about the cold weather and the joys it can bring: snow, holiday traditions, and seasonal foods. However, at some point, we all want the sunshine and greenery to return. This past winter, the flu season has been a doozy with the emergence of a new strain of the flu known as COVID-19.
During this pandemic, try to remember these words which can be attributed to Anita Krizzan “Spring will come and so will happiness. Hold on. Life will get warmer." As we transition into a new season, Moss Ball Pets are welcoming the optimism that finds people in spring!
Moss balls love the sunny days that come with spring but they are not a fan of the warmth that it brings. These fuzzy friends fit in with spring imagery because they are time-tested symbols of love, luck, and happiness. Moss Ball Pets embody the fresh vibe of spring because of their zany green round exteriors and ability to give people a boost of hope. When you think about spring do you envision flowers, breezy days, fresh-cut grass, and other greenery like our moss balls?
Unfortunately, everyone isn’t able to spend as much time outdoors as they like. Due to sickness, seasonal allergies, or sometimes just not having a great schedule at work, people miss out on spending enough time outdoors and it can begin to affect their mental health. That’s right, staying stuck inside all the time messes with your sanity!
Fun fact: Some British doctors have started prescribing houseplants to help people with anxiety and depression.
This spring, you can infuse more joy into your life by starting an indoor garden. For those living in apartments or dorms, it means that there won’t be any need to worry about finding a spot to garden. If you own or rent a single-family home, you can use more of your space for recreational activities when you keep your gardening hobby indoors.
Whether you’re a new or experienced gardener, bringing your passion for plants inside can be a life-changing moment. If you want an even more unique hobby, you could take it a step further and focus on curating an indoor water garden. Here’s our step-by-step to bringing some of that lovely spring feeling into your home:
Everyone is not born with a green thumb. That’s fine, it just means that you need to spend a little more time learning how to love your new friends! When you adopt a Moss Ball Pet you can learn more about caring for them by clicking here or taking a look through our blog.
Each plant you bring into your home has its own personality. One might need more sunlight and a different watering schedule than the other(s). You can learn how to care for them by talking to someone at a local plant nursery or public library. In some areas, there might be a Houseplants Club for you to join. Regardless of how you choose to learn about your pal, you don’t have to do it alone.
Fun fact: Moss balls, also known as marimo, have been known to live over 200 years!
Fun fact: Verdant (ver·dant | ˈvər-dᵊnt ) - green with growing plants
Embracing spring can make a dramatic difference in your mood as we continue to bounce back from the winter sickness and icy coldness. When you begin indoor gardening, you can keep that fresh and sunny spring feeling alive all year long.
Don’t hesitate to cultivate green spaces outside of your home. If you do some research you may find out that there is a community garden near you or a local houseplants group that wants new members. If there isn’t one...you should start your own club.
We would love to see how your Moss Ball Pets are coinciding with your indoor garden, you can tag @mossballpets on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. Follow us if you want to meet some plant-loving people or maybe find some people to help you cultivate a verdant community!

]]>Did you know that people in the U.S. celebrate St. Patrick’s Day more than any other country in the world, including Ireland? Although there have been some changes to this religious holiday, millions still get gussied up in green on March 17th.
When you think of St. Patrick’s Day you may envision leprechauns, beer, "Kiss me I’m Irish" gear, and other elements that don’t apply to Irish culture, or the reason for the season, Saint Patrick.
Fun fact: St. Patty’s Day should be spelled as St. Paddy’s Day. In Irish culture, Patty is short for Patricia and Paddy is short for Pádraig (which is pronounced as Patrick). However, St. Patrick was Roman and he was referred to as Patricius!
Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated in memory of the patron saint of Ireland. He wasn’t the first Christian missionary in Ireland but he was the most successful. When he was 16, Saint Patrick was a Roman citizen living in Britain. One day he was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Ireland.
Eventually, St. Patrick escaped and returned to Britain. He chose to become a bishop and return to Ireland to teach a message of compassion for slaves, women, and poor people. He was met with some hostility but because he knew the language and how to relate Christianity to their pagan traditions, people began to warm up to him.
After about 40 years of working to build churches, advocating for people’s rights, and converting Ireland to Christianity, St. Patrick died on March 17, 461 A.D. Saint Patrick's Day began to be honored in Ireland in 1631, people participated by attending church during the day and ending the day with a feast.
Saint Patrick’s Day in America wasn’t celebrated on a wide scale until around 1762, when soldiers (of Irish heritage) in the British Army held a parade on March 17th on their way to a St. Patrick’s Day breakfast at a tavern. The parades continued annually and after the failed Irish potato crops in 1845, there was a wave of Irish immigrants in the United States.
These immigrants were ridiculed and harassed, so each year on March 17th they honored their old home and traditions. St. Patrick’s Day started transforming into less of a religious holiday and simply became a celebration of being Irish.
Ironically, as the parties and parades for St. Paddy’s grew in America, the day continued to hold religious tones in Ireland until around the time that America’s version of this holiday could be shared globally.
Ireland took a cue from the U.S. and began incorporating some of the festivities that began in America such as eating corned beef and cabbage. Although, most Irish citizens are strongly against adding green dye to their drinks or food.
Fun fact: In 1996, Dublin, Ireland began hosting a multi-day Saint Patrick’s Day Festival and almost a million people attend each year.
One of the most common St. Paddy’s Day symbols is the shamrock ☘️. Saint Patrick used this three-leafed clover as a teaching tool to explain the Holy Trinity to Ireland. Over time, some people have substituted the four-leafed clover for the shamrock because it is considered a lucky charm.
It’s easy to get confused since they are both clovers. There is another lucky green item that could be included in St. Patrick’s Day celebrations: Moss Ball Pets™!
When people discuss having the “luck of the Irish” they’re usually talking about someone who has amazingly good luck. This phrase wasn’t used until the California Gold Rush when it was noticed that Irish people were incredibly adept at striking gold.
Moss balls are considered lucky because of their mystical orb shape and the tragically beautiful Japanese origin story.
This St. Patrick’s Day, you can include your zany marimo in your celebration in three ways:
Everywhere you look on March 17th, you’re likely to see something green. If you’re hosting a holiday party for St. Paddy’s, you could use Moss Ball Pets™ as an eye-catching centerpiece for your table of Irish cuisine.
Moss balls can also be used as a conversation starter when placed in a terrarium on a coffee table or in your cubicle at work! No matter where they are placed, someone is sure to ask you about your fuzzy little green friends.
Recently, people have started to carry around or give out anti-pinch kits on St. Patrick’s Day. If you’re the kind of person who likes to be prepared for anything, you can adopt a moss ball and carry it around in a jar (or even a plastic sandwich bag if you’re in a rush). When someone tries to get you with their crab-esque pincers, your little green buddy can come to the rescue!
It’s also #WomensHistoryMonth, so if there’s a special woman that you admire, you could give her a Moss Ball Pet on March 17th, to protect her from pinching and to show your love, appreciation, or friendship.
Trust me, I know that this doesn’t seem very St. Patrick’s Day related but Moss Ball Pets are the perfect travel companion for a long day of St. Paddy’s Day parades, celebrations, and bar-hopping.
As mentioned before, they are portable, green, and interesting so they’ll definitely help you break the ice at any Saint Patrick's event you attend. They’re equipped to be your lucky charm as you travel from place to place throughout the night.
If you want to know more about traveling with moss balls, click here.
Whether you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in a more traditional way or modern way, you’re sure to have a good time.
Instead of participating in traditions you don’t agree with or understand, you can find a way to integrate your own methods of celebrating Irish culture or the work of St. Paddy. As shown by recent history, it’s never too late to start a new tradition!

]]>During February many holidays could (and should) be celebrated such as Random Acts of Kindness Day, Valentine’s Day, Sri Lankan Independence Day, Black History Month, and countless others.
Moss Ball Pets wants to acknowledge Black History Month by highlighting 8 Black environmentalists. Marimo, these fun little green orbs of algae (moss balls aren’t moss?), are only around today because of a global community of people who have persistently cared about environmental science and conservation. Without environmentalists, many unique natural wonders would cease to exist!
Fun fact: You can learn more about Marimo Matsuri (a Japanese conservation festival) by clicking here!
Annually, as Black History Month takes place, people tend to focus on the tragedy of slavery and the struggle of the Civil Rights Movement. However, Black people have more to offer the world than pain. Black people continue to tremendously contribute to each area within society ranging from the arts to sciences, and every category in between.
As we move forward, it is important to maintain an emphasis on learning from our past so that we can prepare for our future. Taking time to acknowledge these environmentalists is our way of reminding people that we’ve come a long way in terms of caring for each other and our world, but there is still work to be done.
Rue Mapp began Outdoor Afro as a blog in 2009. She used it to share a variety of media and stories with the world to promote healthy living and environmental education. Currently, as a nonprofit, Outdoor Afro has connections all over the U.S. (in almost 30 states).
Ibrahim Salih Abdul-Matin is known for his authentic approach to improving public engagement with the natural world. He is an urban strategist best known for his writing as well as his approach to innovative sustainability which he shares with governments, Fortune 500 countries, and many more people from all walks of life.
She has so many accomplishments, like many of the people on this list, we could dedicate an entire blog post to the legacy that Dr. Maathai created. Dr. Wangari Muta Maathai was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate (Ph.D., Anatomy, University of Nairobi -1971).
She later went on to become the founder of the Green Belt Movement. This movement focuses on getting people together, primarily women, and evoking a love of conservation within them so that they could understand how planting trees positively affects Kenya (and subsequently Africa) for decades to come. So far, members of the Green Belt Movement have grown over 50 million trees.
Will Allen is an urban farmer who is based in Milwaukee. He first rose to fame as the founder of Growing Power, which was a nonprofit farm that supplied thousands of people with the opportunity to learn how to farm as well as access to fresh fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy, as well as fruits, vegetables, and honey. This nonprofit was in place from the mid-1990s until 2017, so for almost 25 years, Will collaborated with numerous others to incorporate urban farming in various states and even other countries! A storyteller, author, and advocate for environmental justice, Dr. Carolyn Finney lives a life dedicated to making the great outdoors an accessible respite for all. She does have varied interests as she has pursued some acting roles and spent five years backpacking around the world. Her book, Black Faces White Spaces, focuses on how people’s view of the natural world in the U.S. changed over time due to racial violence, Jim Crow laws, and other forms of division.
Will Allen would probably be very supportive of the self-proclaimed Gansta Gardener, Ron Finley. Ron grew up in South Central Los Angeles, so he is familiar with the anguish caused by having to drive over half an hour just to get fresh produce. When Ron became fed up with the food desert, in 2010, he slowly began a movement that has come to be known as the Ron Finley Project. The project focuses on expanding community food gardens to other places categorized as food deserts. She first realized The Greenway was needed when she was taking her dog for a walk and it led her to an abandoned dump filled with debris in South Bronx. Majora Carter founded Sustainable South Bronx, and this organization continues to improve life in New York City by providing green job training as well as other environmentally educational ventures.
A rising social entrepreneur and environmental justice advocate, Christopher Bradshaw is instilling change all over the U.S. He believes that an equitable food system could change the lives of many people on a socioeconomic level. Dreaming Out Loud was founded in 2008 to address food disparity in low-income communities in Washington, D.C. Now Chris and his team are still working towards environmentally just and sustainable food growing practices and he even cites Will Allen as one of his main influences.
Some may think that these contributions are irrelevant because they personally do not understand how these changes caused positive change for the world. Others only use Black History Month to focus on some of the figureheads from the Civil Rights Movement like Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King Jr; there should also be some time dedicated to discussing other contributions black people have made to society such as in the field of environmental science.
Although it is important to note that Black people have contributed tremendously to our society, these eight Black environmentalists are our focus as we try to encourage others to expand their knowledge of black history and the importance of sustainable living.
This month does not need to rely on constantly reporting the struggle of black people and our diaspora, it is important to discuss our contributions to society and our achievements as well so that future generations can continue to aspire to greatness instead of suffering to attain success.

Although it is implied that self-care is for...well, your self, there are a few ways for you to involve Moss Ball Pets™. Not only will you be able to give these zany green orbs some TLC (tender loving care) but you’ll also be able to allow yourself to encounter some quality solo time.
Self-care is extremely important to practice when maintaining a healthy lifestyle. When flying in an airplane, the flight attendants remind passengers that in the event of an emergency, they need to put on their oxygen mask, first, before assisting others. Always check the state of your health before trying to help another person. If you don’t take care of yourself, you are putting everyone in danger of experiencing situations that turn into a downward spiral. Your number one priority should always be you; it is not a bad thing to align your focus on self-care.
Clinicians on Psychology Today, a website focused on reliable psychology treatment and topics, have varying things to say about self-care. However, overall they agree that it is vital for people who feel overwhelmed, or too stressed and busy. Self-care should be composed of activities that support your overall well-being and should not be detrimental or harmful at all. Maybe binge-watching shows on Netflix and eating half of a pumpkin pie isn’t that great for you?
In today's fast-paced world, there are times when you might feel like you’re unable to deal with anything. Marimo moss ball care can coincide with any tactic you use to manage your health because caring for them is extremely simple! If you don’t already participate in this trending and useful life skill, starting a self-care regimen could make a gigantic difference in your ability to deal with issues as they arise. Here are three simple ways to establish a self-care routine with Moss Ball Pets™:
Grounding is a technique used by those who have a hard time focusing on the present. People with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), Anxiety, and others who have experienced traumatic events usually benefit the most from adding this tool to their mental health repertoire.
When you begin to feel more relaxed and focused on the present moment instead of negative thoughts, put your little green friend back in its terrarium and move on to the next self-care practice. Next time, try grounding with another item (rock, pen, candle, etc.) to experience the calming effects of being present and aware.
Meditation is one of the oldest and most well-known processes that people use to help take care of themselves. Have you ever heard of object meditation? A marimo moss ball can be incorporated into your routine by being used as your focal point while you follow along in a guided meditation.
The serene look of the vibrant spherical Moss Ball Pets™ as they sit on your coffee table or desk during your meditation, might help you stay centered while searching for inner calm.
There are also other things to do for your benefit while outdoors such as reading, singing, taking pictures, practicing yoga, going on a picnic, and so much more. You can take your Moss Ball Pet™ with you because they love to travel with their owners!
It is clear that although some people believe that self-care is a waste of time, self-care is extremely important to practice when maintaining a healthy lifestyle. There are times when you should include your Moss Ball Pet™ because it would benefit you both. Finding a marimo moss ball for sale can be tricky when you’re trying to find out which one is the best.
Don’t let that deter you from including them in your self-care regimen. Moss Ball Pets™ are a wonderful addition to your self-care practice because caring for yourself should be your main priority and they can assist you. It is not selfish or bad to make sure that you are presenting the best version of yourself to the world around you. Go ahead and take some time today to make sure that you’re equipped to maintain a healthy lifestyle!

]]>How do you celebrate the impending new year? Some people choose to host or attend parties in observance of a fresh start. Others will do their best to adhere to the requirements of globally popular superstitions: kissing someone at midnight to avoid a year of loneliness, wearing red for good luck, cooking certain foods to ensure a wealthy new year, and the list could go on endlessly.
Another common way to celebrate a new year is planning resolutions or goals to achieve as the year progresses. However, 2020 isn’t simply a new year...it’s a new decade! Now is the time to start a new tradition; this year consider focusing on a specific word or phrase.
The Moss Ball Pets™ team has chosen our 2020 Word of the Year: Care.
We believe that people should focus on embodying care in 2020 because it will positively enhance every other aspect of their life. Empathic people continuously put effort into maintaining strong communities and relationships. This lifestyle then beneficially impacts everyone, especially when the care is focused on community service or assisting the public.
When you care about something and show that you care, it creates an opportunity to personally experience fulfillment and happiness. Expressing consideration about something usually encourages other people to genuinely care about something as much as you!
If you’re ready to *leap into 2020 as a more caring person, keep reading for a list of 5 ways you can infuse care into everything you do.
*February 29th, 2020 is on Saturday! Happy Leap Year!
I know that this concept can be confusing, so remember that demonstrating your care isn’t just something you need to prioritize in romantic relationships. As mentioned previously, every area of your life could be improved by incorporating care.
○ People can volunteer in their community by completing a multitude of tasks. A quick online search could put you in touch with organizations in your area that need volunteers. No matter what your skillset is, your community needs your involvement to flourish. Some people may help out by serving food at homeless shelters, others prefer cleaning up the beach or local parks. However, if you don’t have a lot of time you can always make a financial contribution.
2020 is the year for everyone to focus on pouring care back into the world around us to ensure a sustainable future. Pablo Casals, a well known Spanish cellist, once said, “I feel the capacity to care is the thing which gives life its deepest significance.” Make this year significant and be prepared to enjoy a thriving new decade!

]]>A very important important day is upon us...
...That’s right, Mother’s Day! The history of Mother’s Day can be traced to back to the ancient Romans and Greeks. They held various ceremonies for different goddesses of fertility and mothers. The closest thing to Mother’s Day in ancient times would have most likely been a Christian festival that was known as Mothering Sunday.
Mother’s Day is celebrated in almost every culture. It is a time to honor mothers, people who have provided a maternal presence, and the motherly bonds that are created. These celebrations usually take place in the spring, sometime during the months of March or May.
In America, Mother’s Day started to be celebrated in around 1868 when Ann Jarvis organized Mothers’ Friendship Day. She began this as a way for mothers to gather with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation after the Civil War.
While Ann Jarvis and many other people (Mary Towles Sasseen and Frank Hering, Julia Ward Howe, Juliet Calhoun Blakely, etc.) campaigned to have Mother’s Day recognized on a national level, they remain unsuccessful.
However, following Ann’s death in 1905, her daughter Anna Jarvis began hosting Mother’s Day events and advocating for a day that honored motherhood by contacting politicians and writing to newspapers. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure to officially establish Mother’s Day as a national event.
It's Mother's Day (or past) and you are still on the hunt for a fantastic gift for your mom? If so, don’t worry about it any longer, Moss Ball Pets would make a marvelous Mother’s Day gift! Moss Ball Pets are symbol of long lasting love and there are many reasons they benefit those that receive a plushy zany moss ball.
A Moss Ball Pet would be a lovely gift for the mother who has everything or who never wants a gift. Right now, there’s a special promotion, with every order you will receive a FREE baby 👶 Moss Ball Pet! Mothers are not known solely for their ability to raise children but for their strength in raising children AND maintaining their own passions. If you ask any parent, mom or dad, they’ll probably share Tina Fey’s sentiment about being a parent,“Being a mom has made me so tired. And so happy.”
This Mother’s Day, please remember to visit or call your mom, if you can, and let them know that you’re sorry for making them so tired but you’re glad you could make them so happy!

]]>When you think of Cinco De Mayo, what kind of imagery flows through your mind? If you’re like 90% of Americans, you’re probably thinking of Tex-Mex cuisine, mariachi bands, and other completely unrelated symbols.
Surprisingly, Cinco De Mayo is similar to St.Paddy’s Day. (I bet you’ve never thought that before.)
In America, people tend to associate these particular days with elements that do not portray their historical importance.
Fun fact: The English translation for Cinco De Mayo is May 5th. It has nothing to do with mayo 😬.
Cinco De Mayo in America wasn’t celebrated on a wide scale until sometime in the 1980s when large companies (primarily those in the alcoholic beverage industry) began marketing towards those of Mexican descent.
Many people still think that it was originally meant to celebrate Mexico and its independence from Spain but Mexico’s Independence Day is on September 16th.
In 1861, Benito Juárez, the first indigenous Mexican president, decided as one of his first acts to assist the Mexican economy, he needed to cancel all of the repayment plans that Mexico had with foreign countries (Britain, Spain, and France).
During this same time, the United States was starting to experience the Civil War. Britain, Spain, and France sent troops to fight in Mexico and receive payment. After the Mexican military proved themselves as a force to be reckoned with, Britain and Spain withdrew their soldiers.
However, Napoleon III wanted the French to overthrow the Mexican government and potentially advance to the American South to assist the Confederacy. Against all odds during the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862 the Mexican soldiers were able to defeat French forces.
This win inspired the Mexican people and four days later, Juárez declared that Cinco De Mayo would become a national holiday.
Some historians believe that this win also played an influential part in the American Civil War because if the French had been able to support the Confederacy, there may have been a different outcome and the United States wouldn’t have stayed united.
Previous to the 1980s, Cinco De Mayo was only observed by some Americans and the citizens of Puebla. It began to gain notice in the U.S. when the Mexican immigrants began to use it as another opportunity to teach others about their culture.
Now that you know more about this important event, you can properly celebrate it with your friends and families!
Fun fact: The Battle of Puebla took place about 70 miles from Mexico City (the capital of Mexico).
This Cinco De Mayo you can include your amazing moss amigo in your celebration!
These are our top five, or cinco, ways to get started:
Fun fact: Skip to #4 if you want to find out how you can take your lil moss ball buddy to the museum with you!
Stay as far away from offensive costumes and instead focus on creating unique decorations that accurately represent this day. Alternatively, instead of coming up with a theme, incorporate the colors of the Mexican flag throughout your home.
Need a refresher on what colors that will entail? White to represent the purity of their religious faith, red represents the blood spilled during the fight for independence, and green for hope. Moss ball pets represent love, love, and happiness, so they would be the perfect centerpiece for Cinco De Mayo.
The headline above can be translated to “Moss friends for your friends”. Is there a special person that you admire? Adopting a moss ball for them is a fantastic way to show your love, appreciation, or friendship.
Who gives gifts on Cinco De Mayo? Not many people, but many people also wouldn’t turn down a gift, regardless of the day!
Moss Ball Pets are the perfect travel companion for a long day of Cinco De Mayo parties, parades, celebrations, and bar-hopping.
Your moss amigo will help you break the ice at any event you attend. If you want to know more about traveling with Moss Ball PetsTM, click here.
There are many variations of Mexican cuisine because it is a global favorite. If you’re like most people you might want to make a simple guacamole or taco to enjoy May 5th. 🌮
Challenge yourself and try one of the 15 recipes that Samantha Simon put together on this nifty list. Moss balls can also be the stars of the show when placed in a terrarium on a coffee table or dining table as you enjoy your new Mexican themed meal! No matter where they are placed, someone is sure to admire your fuzzy little green orb.
Fun fact: “Musgo” is the Spanish term for moss!
Whether you celebrate Cinco De Mayo in a more traditional way or modern way, it’ll be enjoyable. Instead of participating in traditions you don’t agree with or understand, you can find a way to integrate your methods of celebrating Mexican culture or the Battle of Puebla.
As shown by recent history, it’s never too late to start a new tradition:

]]>Red roses, heart shaped boxes of chocolates, and stuffed animals are just a few of the gifts that are traditionally exchanged during Valentine’s Day. On February 14th (and the days leading up to it) Americans spend billions expressing their emotions for the ones they care about. This year, consider finding a unique and modern icon of love like Moss Ball Pets, to share with those who matter most!
While Valentine’s Day has come a long way from its origins in ancient Rome, it feels like people have gotten used to buying lacy greeting cards, jewelry, and all kinds of candy. Some people think Valentine's Day gifts have to be a certain color or have hearts on it, but they just haven’t gotten to know enough about moss balls.
Fun fact: Moss Ball Pets are known by many names such as marimo (Japan), kúluskítur (Iceland), lake balls, lake goblins, and cladophora balls.
People from all over the world are ecstatic to participate in Valentine’s Day because it gives them the opportunity to display their most intimate feelings about other people. In recent times, gifts have started to expand to include things like massage coupons, gift cards, and movie tickets. It may not be expected but, Moss Ball Pets are a long lasting symbol of love and and devotion.
Fun fact: The oldest living marimo on record is over 200 years old!
The Japanese folklore surrounding the strange and alluring moss balls took place centuries ago, along the shores of Lake Akan. The story details the forbidden love between a chief’s daughter, Princess Senato, and a commoner, Manibe, within the Ainu tribe which was a group of hunters and gatherers that lived along the Japanese Island of Hokkaido.
As all forbidden loves go, the couple was not allowed to be together so they ran away from the village (somewhere near Mount Meakan) to be with each other for the rest of their lives.
However, the people of the Ainu tribe are animists. Animism is the belief that everything has a soul (plants, animals, the sun, the moon, rivers, mountains, etc.). This means that when fluffy green balls of algae, also known as marimo or moss balls, began to appear along the shores of Lake Akan, rumors spread through the Ainu tribe that the spirits of the star crossed lovers had turned into the marimo.
Ever since then, Moss Ball Pets have been considered a symbolic gift to give when you want to express long lasting commitment, prosperity, and love.
On our website, during this love infused time of the year, if you buy A Moss Ball Pet Terrarium $2 off plus you get another Moss Ball Pet to go in it for FREE (they can grow old together just like Princess Senato and Manibe)!
Most people agree that Valentine’s Day has its own theme colors of red and pink (with the occasional purple or white). That doesn’t mean that you can’t go the way of the road less traveled and have a little fun.
If you incorporate some velvet-y green spheres into your Valentine’s Day plans; you’ll be sure to make anyone on your gift giving list much happier.
Moss Ball Pets are not just for emotions of intense love, they can also be given as a way to wish someone well or to express wanting a long lasting relationship (no matter what the label on it is).

]]>At the beginning of the year, everyone begins to discuss the plethora of ways they will change and start the upcoming year “on the right foot”. These resolutions range from committing to a new diet to instilling a new habit. The owner of Moss Ball Pets, Joshua Buscay, believes that everyone can accomplish all they want to achieve in the new year, especially with the help of our lucky little helpers: moss balls.
Some people adopt a new look or attitude as they dive into their new year’s resolutions, why not adopt a new pet instead? Aegagropila linnaei which are also known as lake balls, moss balls, or marimo in Japan, are touted as special balls of algae that can repair relationships, encourage prosperity, and ensure a lot of luck and love!
There is no denying that people all over the world could benefit from having moss balls in their life. Not only do they offer great benefits for the elderly and those who may not be able to afford or take care of traditional pets, but they also make very unique and thoughtful gifts for your loved ones. Moss balls were first noticed in Austria by Dr. Anton Sauter in 1823. He observed moss balls in Lake Zeller and, in 1898, Tatsuhiko Kawakami discovered marimo ( mari which means a bouncy play ball and mo a generic term for plants that grow in water) in Lake Akan, Japan.
Soon afterwards, people realized that they primarily inhabited lakes in Scotland, Russia, the United Kingdom, Estonia, and other countries with a similar climate. In Japan and Iceland they became recognized as a national treasure and many people began to keep them as “pets”.
Some people may be surprised to hear that moss balls are kept as pets but you can click here to read 10 amazing reasons to adopt a Moss Ball Pet! As the new year approaches, we can all agree that the moss balls’ lucky properties are the most mysterious. The lore of how to utilize the prosperity promised by Moss Ball Pets varies from region to region.
For example, it is an Icelandic belief that taking extremely good care of your moss ball will make your wishes come true. There is a legend in Japan of two star crossed lovers who wanted to spend eternity together and when life got in the way, as it sometimes does, their spirits became marimo so they could be together for hundreds of years.
Regardless of what your intentions for the new year may be, a little extra luck couldn’t hurt. Marimo are extremely resilient plants and don’t require much care so they would make great good luck charms!
To make sure that your year is as successful as possible, do your best to have other things (a strong support team, a new planner or calendar, etc.) in place to help you attain your goals. Personally, I like to make dream boards and motivating playlists. I even use an inspirational board on Pinterest to keep up with advice to help me flourish.
Everyone is different though, for instance some people rely on lucky underwear or a favorite sports jersey. Others may carry a rabbit’s foot or a lucky coin. A lucky Moss Ball Pet is not such a ridiculous concept to consider!
The new year is like a long awaited breath of fresh air. It’s a new beginning that serves as a reminder to realign yourself with your passions and goals. It can be hard to keep up the cheerful optimism that comes into play when you first begin to have aspirations.
If you find yourself starting to dwindle and need a good reminder of how excited you were when you began to dream, think of the words of Tony Robbins, “Stay committed to your decisions but stay flexible in your approach.” Why not approach your new year’s resolutions with a Moss Ball Pet in each hand?

The day after Thanksgiving has been widely known as “the beginning of the holiday season” officially since 1966 when it was credited to the Philadelphia Police Department.* It has only continued to grow with elaborate sales and dangerous traffic on the road and in the aisles of the stores.

]]>If you are familiar with the fuzzy phenomenon known as lake balls or, marimo , then you also know that there are multiple sellers of these unique balls of algae. Although there are many others who claim to sell good moss balls, we at Moss Ball Pets know that our marimo are of the utmost value. We only provide high quality, reasonably priced moss balls that are sourced by utilizing an environmentally friendly technique.
The top tier form of marimo that are sourced and sold by Moss Ball Pets surpasses the options that are available from other distributors such as Petco, PetSmart, Luffy, and various sellers on Amazon and Etsy.
One of the best ways to prove this is by taking a deeper look into the composition of the moss balls. Our moss balls are actual living organisms as opposed to the synthetically created faux plants that are being sold by untrustworthy companies. These fake moss balls can be created in a variety of ways but one of the most deceitful methods include using balls of styrofoam that have artificial moss attached to them.
Authentic marimo are completely algae. They do not have a center such as a pit or ball; the way that this amazing form of algae grows means that it does not need to attach itself to something else to form into that impressive round shape. If you want to learn more about the scientific aspects of marimo, click here!
Moss Ball Pets™ are artificially rolled from free floating filaments. This means that small pieces of the algae is taken from one of the various lakes where marimo can be found (such as Japan, Scotland, Iceland, and other locations) and then closely maintained until it is ready to be sold.
This method allows people to continue to enjoy the natural beauty of the fascinating marimo without further damaging them or their habitats.
The people who adopt our marimo are extremely happy with the process of adoption and the quality of Moss Ball Pets. Our testimonials prove it!

]]>This may be a little surprising (especially if this is your first Moss Ball Pets blog post) but Moss Ball Pets are actually not moss at all! It is easy to see how people could get algae and moss mixed up. They are both soft, usually green, and damp, right?
While moss and algae have some characteristics in common, they differ because moss is a plant and, well, algae... scientists have just settled on calling it an organism that contains chlorophyll (you know, the stuff that makes plants look green). Think of moss like mushrooms, they do not produce flowers and release spores to reproduce. Algae also does not produce flowers but can reproduce in a multitude of ways.
Fun fact: Algae is the plural form of alga ( pronounced AL- guh)! Algae can also be pronounced as AL-Gee or AL-ghi!
Moss Ball Pets are actually a form of algae known in the scientific community as Aegagropila linnaei. Around the world it is known by many names such as marimo (Japan), kúluskítur (Iceland), lake balls, lake goblins, cladophora balls, and (of course) moss balls. However, there was a time when no one knew what they were or what to call them!
The first recorded discovery of these velvety balls of algae occured in the 1820s when an Austrian botanist and physician, Anton E. Sauter, took notice of them. He spotted them in Lake Zell (sometimes written as Lake Zeller) which is a small body of water located in Austria.
Although Sauter observed the odd looking organisms, he did not name them. They did not officially receive a name until the 1840s. In 1843, Friedrich T. Kützing, a German botanist, phycologist (this means he specialized in the study of algae), and pharmacist, indicated that the genus for this organism was Aegagropila.
A little while later, in 1849, Kützing renamed the genus as Cladophora. This led to A. linnaei being referred to as “cladophora balls”. However, in 2002 after utilizing DNA study, a group of scientists denied that it should be considered as Cladophora due to its cell structure. This discovery has not stopped people from calling them cladophora balls, and in some ways this makes sense because the saying is, “Old habits die hard.”
Fun fact: Aegagropila means “goat hair” in Greek. It is understandable that this is the name he chose because moss balls can feel somewhat like soft clumps of hair.
He is the one we can thank for the common name marimo which is roughly translates to “bouncy ball”. After his initial discovery, the popularity of marimo increased exponentially, and many people were spending money to attain these little velvety green orbs. By the 1950s, the people of Japan joined together to preserve their beautiful species of algae and every year since then, Marimo Matsuri has taken place in order to celebrate nature and all of its beauty with marimo being the primary focus of the festival.
Currently, there are three ways that scientists have identified the growth of lake goblins. (Isn’t that a fun name for them?) One growth form exists as free-floating filaments.
For this transformation to take place, the algae is pushed and pulled by the tides of the body of water. This movement helps keep the lake balls clean and round. They must also be in water that is an agreeable salinity and temperature. Another thing moss balls require is ability to occasionally access light so that photosynthesis can take place.
When it is in ball form, many people wonder: “What is at the center?”. They kind of think that it is like a pearl, which usually begins when a parasite or some kind of irritant finds its way into a clam, oyster, or mussel and the animal coats it in many layers of nacre (the name of the secretion that makes pearl look so pretty). In spite of this assumption, there is nothing at the center of the lake balls except its own algae. So, there is no longer a need for you to wonder if there is some sort of rock or seed in the middle of your Moss Ball Pet!
After being shaped into a ball, A. linnaei, grows at a rate of about of about five millimeters, or 0.2 inches, a year. Moss balls are known to grow up to eight inches and, in the right conditions, they can surpass this expected growth rate. The world’s largest (and oldest) marimo is said to be 95 centimeters, or 37 inches, in diameter. This means that it is over 200 years old!
In Lake Akan, Japan, marimo seem to be growing the largest, with some of the biggest being noted at twelve inches. In Lake Mývatn, which is located near the Krafla volcano in Iceland, the kúluskítur (which kind of means “muck balls” in Icelandic), usually get to be about five inches in diameter and they stay together in patches, called colonies, that often get caught in the fishers’ nets.
Now I believe one of the last questions left to answer is: “How do Moss Ball Pets reproduce?”
They usually reproduce through budding. This is an asexual form of reproduction that can take place when the moss ball is big enough and has enough room to continue growing. You might notice a little bump forming on its rounded surface and that is how you can tell that it is creating another marimo!
After the initial discoveries in places such as Japan, Austria, Iceland, Scotland, the cladophora ball craze began! Phycologist, botanist, and other kinds of scientists were eager to see if bodies of water in their parts of the world contained the mystical and spherical green orbs of algae.
Thanks to their excitement, we now know that cladophora balls can be found in a multitude of other places such as India, Britain, Georgia, Germany, the United States of America, Romania, Russia, Cuba, China, Australia, and many other places!
This meant that the lake balls were not able to get enough sunlight and they began to sink beneath the sediment in the lake due to to constant mining.
Now, instead of the colonies of moss balls that use to inhabit the lake, the Icelandic people are left with some of the free-floating filaments which can not form into the balls because they still do not have the right conditions. Conservation tactics have recently been put into place so that this is no longer the situation.
As previously mentioned, Japan went a different route to avoid this tragedy from happening. Marimo was declared a national treasure in the 1920s and since then most people have refrained from removing the marimo that grow in their natural habitat.
In an act of decency, people have decided that to enjoy the marimo and not harm them they could just use small samples of the filaments and grow their own! This method, which is the one we use at Moss Ball Pets, ensures that moss balls do not need to be removed from their natural environment for people to be able to enjoy them.
Moss Ball Pets are unique living organisms that are rapidly disappearing but through continued conservation and research efforts, they can continue to be admired for many more generations!

This love for marimo became problematic when too many moss balls were being sold without allowing time for the algae to replenish itself (It can take hundreds of years for marimo to grow to 30 cm in diameter!).
Soon marimo became a protected species in Japan and the Ainu tribe, which is aligned closely with the lore of the marimo, began hosting Marimo Matsuri, a festival to celebrate their appreciation for nature and to teach others how to honor and conserve it.
In 1920, Japan took notice of marimo and decided to make them a Japanese National Treasure. This action actually caused more of the special balls of algae to be taken from Lake Akan by excited tourists and locals! The plants were also affected heavily by other environmental problems such as a diverted water supply and the logging industry in Hokkaido.
Almost 30 years later, Japanese citizens began to realize the damage that people were causing the national treasures. In an incredible act of kindness, many sent their marimo back to Lake Akan. To celebrate the return of these marimo to Lake Akan, the Ainu people decided to host a homecoming festival on October 7th,1950.
This festival is still held every year and has evolved into a three-day celebration, which takes place during the beginning of October. Each day involves different ceremonies and community discussions about the importance of conservation.
The festival reaches its midpoint during the Welcoming of Marimo Ritual that takes place on the second night of the event. Festival attendees and the Ainu people gather on the shores of the lake as Ainu youth arrive in canoes to bring marimo to the elders. Over 400 people usually gather to participate in singing the Ainu folk songs and then march over to the Ainu Kotan square while carrying torches.
Once they reach the square, each regional group of the Ainu tribe performs their own dance. Most of these dances are designed to replicate the movements of living creatures like the Crane dance or the Grasshopper dance.
On the last day, tribal members and others gather in the morning to express their appreciation for Mother Nature. Also, after a special prayer called the Kamuinomi, another march begins to return the marimo to the lake. Dancing children gather around the elders as they row from the shores to deliver the marimo home one by one.
The Marimo Matsuri event does receive some backlash due to it being a tradition that was started in more recent times. For this reason, some Ainu communities like to point out that there are no examples or stories of the Ainu people having a great respect for the marimo.
Despite the anger from some tribal members, others support the festival because they feel as if it is never too late to begin respecting nature or celebrating the conservation of an endangered plant. The supporters of the festival like to remind others that the event began as a way to honor the return of the marimo in 1950 and that at its core, this is what Marimo Matsuri is still about.
The Moss Ball Pets that you purchase with us are not the endangered species of algae that we’ve been discussing. These marimo are artificially rolled from free-floating filaments. This means that small pieces of the algae is taken from the various lakes where marimo can be found and then maintained until it is ready to be sold. In this manner, people are able to appreciate these beautiful and special plants without endangering them or their habitats.

Many years ago in ancient Rome, during the 3rd century A.D., it is believed that Emperor Claudius II executed two (or three) men (who were known as Valentine or Valentinus). The executions took place on February 14th but in different years.
During this time, there was already a celebration of love in ancient Rome that happened from February 13th through 15th, and it was known as Lupercalia . However, this event was not as fun and romantic as the celebration of love we have now. Lupercalia involved animal sacrifice, physical abuse, and getting drunk.
No one really knows why St. Valentine was put to death.
Some say it was because he was priest who made sure that couples could get married, even though it had been outlawed because Emperor Claudius II believed that single men were better soldiers.
Others think it has something to do with Valentine helping prisoners escape from harsh Roman prisons. They say that once he was captured and imprisoned, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. Before his death, he wrote her a love letter and signed it, “From Your Valentine”, an expression we still use today!
St. Valentine is one of the reasons for Valentine’s Day, but we utilize many different symbols of love to showcase our emotions to loved ones. We also exchange cards, stuffed animals, flowers, and more. Moss Ball Pets are also a long lasting symbol of love and and devotion!
This can all be credited to the tale of a beautiful romance which took place centuries ago, along the shores of Lake Akan. The story details the young forbidden love between a chief’s daughter and a commoner within the Ainu tribe, a group of hunters and gatherers that lived along the Japanese Island of Hokkaido.
As all young forbidden loves go, the couple was not allowed to be together so they ran away (somewhere near Mount Meakan) to be with each other for the rest of their lives. However, the people of the Ainu tribe are animists. Animism is the belief that everything has a soul (plants, animals, the sun, the moon, rivers, mountains, etc.).
So, when weird fluffy green balls of algae, also known as marimo or Moss Ball Pets, began to appear along the shores of Lake Akan, rumors spread through the Ainu tribe that the spirits of the star crossed lovers had become marimo.
Ever since then, marimo have been considered a symbolic gift to give when you want to express long lasting commitment, prosperity, and love.
Some people say “Diamonds are forever!” Those people might be referring to a James Bond film of the same name. Others might be discussing the song popularized by Shirley Bassey (which was later sampled in the song “Diamonds from Sierra Leone” by Kanye West).
There are not many gifts that compare to something as long lasting as a piece of jewelry. However, Moss Ball Pets are definitely more likely to withstand the test of time. Think about this: How often do people lose rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets?
Unquestionably, Moss Balls Pets are much easier to keep track of and maintain than precious jewelry!
Adopting a Moss Ball Pet is much cheaper (and way more fun) than getting in line at the jewelry store. The cute and unique marimo simply require water and access to light, and occasionally they need to be squeezed or rolled. If you want to know more about taking care of marimo, click here.
Thinking about purchasing a bouquet of flowers or a nice box of chocolates? Those traditional gifts are great but, they don’t possess the longevity of moss balls. Marimo are known to live for hundreds of years (if taken care of properly). A bouquet of fresh cut roses can barely make it for two or three weeks!
Modern dating can be pretty confusing. The new terms for relationships a.k.a
“situationships” range from bae to breadcrumbing and ghosting. There’s also a lot of confusion between the phases of being with another person. Are we “just talking” or are we just talking?
If you are experiencing one of these modern dating problems and you’re kind of unsure about what to purchase for that complicated someone special, consider adopting a Moss Ball Pet!
They’re not just for emotions of intense love, they can also be given as a way to wish someone well or to express wanting a long lasting relationship (no matter what the label on it is).
Purchasing a Moss Ball Pet for a friend or family member could mean that you always want them to be a part of your life.
While St. Valentine may be the cause of this holiday, there are many different symbols of love that we use to express our emotions to loved ones. Some of the symbols that portray love include hearts, flowers, and doves. This year, why not begin using another symbol of love?
Moss Ball Pets can be an indication of romantic love but no matter who you’re shopping for this Valentine’s Day adopting a new Moss Ball Pet for them would be a beautiful way to show them you care!
